Is timber fencing susceptible to termite damage?

Termites pose a risk to properties next to nature reserves, parks and trees, however there are things you can do to protect your timber structures from being affected by termites. First your choice in material is important, if you are opting for timber, make sure you choose treated timber as a first point of call. Some timbers are less susceptible to termite damage than others because termite seem to avoid specific species of trees including: redwoods, yellow cedar, Laotian teak, and cypress.

The timber needs to be treated with termite resistant coatings such as an oil based stain, if you are painting, you can use a termite resistant paint, clear the area from shrubs or extended branches from near by trees, remove mulch and where possible remove plants nearby. Drainage is also important to reduce water damage on the timber, which increases susceptiblity to damage. And lastly, if you live in an area where there is termite activity, regularly inspect your timber fence for signs of termite damage. Consider alternative materials such as Colorbond fencing or aluminium or even chain wire as they may be better options for your fence.
